Franchitti, Power take Texas Indy wins

FORT WORTH, Texas, June 12 (UPI) -- Dario Franchitti won the first of Saturday's IndyCar races and Will Power took the second Firestone Twin 275 race at Texas Motor Speedway.

Franchitti turned in a dominating performance after taking the lead in the opening lap of the first race of the doubleheader.

The only time the two-time defending IZOD IndyCar Series champion wasn't in the lead of the 114-lap event was during a round of green flag pit stops.

Rookie drivers Wade Cunningham and Charlie Kimball were involved in a crash that necessitated a 10-lap shootout at the end, during which Franchitti's Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon issued him a challenge.

Franchitti, however, turned away Dixon's late push and held on for a 0.05-second victory -- his first ever at Texas Motor Speedway.

Power, the IndyCar points leader, came in third, followed by pole-sitter Alex Tagliani and Takuma Sato.

In the second race, Power emerged with the victory after narrowly avoiding a collision with Graham Rahal, who had stalled on the track after running out of gas.

Power grabbed the lead with six laps to go and outpaced Dixon by 0.95 seconds, claiming his ninth career IndyCar win.

Penske teammates Ryan Briscoe and Helio Castroneves ended in third and fourth, respectively, with pole-sitter Tony Kanaan claiming the fifth spot.

Franchitti took seventh and now trails Power by 21 points in the IZOD IndyCar Series standings.
