Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

TORONTO, June 11 (UPI) -- Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka has undergone successful elbow ligament reconstructive surgery, the team announced Saturday in Toronto.
The procedure to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm in a "Tommy John" procedure was performed by surgeon Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles.
Matsuzaka, 30, will miss the rest of this season as well as part of the 2012 campaign. The Japanese hurler, whose last game came May 16, compiled a record of 3-3 with a 5.30 ERA in eight games in 2011.
The right-hander, in his fifth year of American baseball, has a six-year, $52 million contract that expires after 2012 -- meaning he may have played his last game as a member of the Red Sox.
