ANAHEIM, Calif., June 11 (UPI) -- Home runs by Melky Cabrera and Billy Butler helped stake Kansas City to a four-run lead Friday and the Royals held off the Los Angeles Angels 4-2.
The Angels lost their sixth straight and tumbled six games off the pace in the American League West.
Cabrera homered in the first and Butler had a solo blast in the fourth. Kansas City built its lead to 4-0 in the sixth on an RBI single by Chris Getz and a run-scoring double by Alcides Escobar.
Starter Jeff Francis (3-6) surrendered two runs in the sixth, but got the win by surviving 6 1/3 innings. He gave up the two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Joakim Soria struck out two in the ninth and recorded his ninth save.
Ervin Santana (3-6) allowed all four Kansas City runs on seven hits in seven innings. He has given up at least seven hits in six of his last eight starts.
