SAN DIEGO, June 10 (UPI) -- Chase Headley hit a two-run homer in the first inning Thursday that started the San Diego Padres on their way to a 7-3 decision over Washington.

Headley had a career-best 16-game hitting streak come to an end Tuesday night and he went hitless as well on Wednesday. That brief slump came to an end, however, when he hit his second homer of the season off starter and loser Livan Hernandez (3-8).

The Padres took control with a three-run sixth that gave them a 6-2 cushion. Brad Hawpe had an RBI single in the inning, Kyle Phillips drew a bases-loaded walk and Logan Forsythe added a sacrifice fly.

Aaron Harang (7-2) worked six innings to get the victory, giving up two runs on six hits. He won his second straight start after failing to earn a decision in four consecutive appearances.

Hernandez was roughed up for six runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.
