CINCINNATI, June 8 (UPI) -- Ryan Dempster and three relievers combined on a four-hitter Wednesday in pacing the Chicago Cubs to a 4-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
Dempster (5-5) allowed three hits -- all singles -- and walked one and struck out eight. Kerry Woods had one inning of one-hit relief and Sean Marshall and Carlos Marmol each pitched 1-2-3 innings. Marmol collected his 11th save.
The Reds took the lead off Dempster with two hits in the third. Drew Stubbs led off with a single and stole second. After two outs, Jay Bruce lined a hit to right that drove in Stubbs.
The Cubs quickly answered the next inning. After Blake DeWitt reached on an error, Carlos Pena and Aramis Ramirez hit back-to-back home runs. Pena's shot to right was his ninth homer of the season, while Ramirez, who hit his to left, has three.
Chicago added an insurance run in the seventh when Cincinnati reliever Bill Bray was called for a balk with the bases loaded. All of the Chicago runs were charged to Reds starter Bronson Arroyo (4-6), who gave up eight hits over 6 1/3 innings.
