CINCINNATI, June 7 (UPI) -- Edinson Volquez tossed seven strong innings and Miguel Cairo cracked a grand slam Tuesday in the Cincinnati Reds' 8-2 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Volquez (4-2), who had been demoted to Class AAA Louisville after a spell of ineffectiveness, returned from the minor leagues to throttle the Cubs on one run on seven hits over seven frames, walking one and striking out five.
Cincinnati had built a 4-1 lead by the seventh inning when Cubs reliever John Grabow loaded the bases with one out and Cairo hit a 1-1 pitch off the facing of the second deck for a grand slam.
Chicago starter Doug Davis (0-5) lost his fifth straight decision since being called up by the Cubs, who dropped their eighth consecutive game. The left-hander was touched for four runs on seven hits before being pulled after 4 1/2 frames.
Blake DeWitt went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Chicago.
