Plaxico Burress released from prison

ROME, N.Y., June 6 (UPI) -- Plaxico Burress, a former receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants, was released Monday after nearly two years in a New York prison.

The 33-year-old Burress left the Oneida Correctional Facility in Rome, N.Y. His attorney said Burress would travel to Florida to be with his family.

Burress was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty Aug. 20, 2009, to attempted criminal possession of a weapon. He served 20 months of the sentence, with time off for good behavior.

The charges stemmed from an incident Nov. 29, 2009, in which a gun Burress was carrying accidentally fired at a New York nightclub. Burress suffered a wound to his right thigh in the shooting.

Burress has 505 receptions for 7,845 yards and 55 touchdowns over a nine-year NFL career. He spent his first five NFL seasons with the Steelers before joining the Giants in 2005. He caught a pass that turned out to be the game-winning touchdown in the Giants' 17-14 victory over New England in Super Bowl XLII in February 2008. The Giants released him April 3, 2009, during his legal problems.
