MIAMI, June 6 (UPI) -- The Florida Marlins have placed shortstop Hanley Ramirez on the disabled list with an inflamed lower back, the team said Monday.
The Marlins said the move is retroactive to May 30 and comes after a magnetic resonance image revealed the inflammation but no structural damage.
The three-time all-star said he hoped to return to action in a week.
Florida Manager Edwin Rodriguez told MLB.com he wanted Ramirez to be fully healthy rather than playing him sparingly with a painful back and left hip.
The Marlins said they had purchased the contract of pitcher Brad Hand from Jacksonville of the Class AA Southern League to fill the roster spot.
The 21-year-old left-hander has posted a 7-1 record with a 3.53 ERA in 11 starts at Jacksonville this season.
