Jovanovski among upset victims at Aegon

BIRMINGHAM, England, June 6 (UPI) -- No. 10-seeded Bojana Jovanovski was among three seeded players ousted Monday in first-round play of the Aegon Classic in England.

Jovanovski won only 15 points in the first set and fell to world No. 297 Sarah Gronert 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. Gronert, a qualifier, had five breaks in the match, including two in the third set.

Sabine Lisicki and Heather Watson also pulled off upsets. Lisicki defeated 12th-seeded Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) and Watson was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over No. 15 Chanelle Scheepers.

There were 16 matches on Monday's schedule for the tournament that kicks off the grass-court season.

Three seeded players advanced, including No. 13 Rebecca Marino, who swept by Melanie South 6-4, 6-1. No. 14 Magdalena Rybarikova stopped Emily Webley-Smith 6-4, 6-3 and 16th-seeded Alla Kudryavtseva beat Alize Cornet 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.

Other winners were: Arina Rodionova, Coco Vandeweghe, Kirsten Flipkens, Marina Erakovic, Olga Govortsova, Alison Riske, Sorana Cirstea, Mirjana Lucic, Rika Fujiwara and Anna Tatishvili.
