NEW YORK, June 1 (UPI) -- NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced Wednesday Colin Campbell had stepped down from his role as the league's chief disciplinarian.

Bettman said Campbell, 58, would be replaced by Brendan Shanahan, who is the NHL's current vice president of hockey and business development.

Campbell has been in charge of handing out punishment for various on-ice offenses. He played as a defenseman for the Vancouver Canucks and was head coach of the New York Rangers during the 1990s before becoming part of the NHL's front office.

Campbell will remain the league's vice president and director of hockey operations.

Shanahan, 42, played in the NHL from 1987 to 2009. He scored 656 goals and compiled 1,354 points in more than 1,500 games.
