ATLANTA, May 30 (UPI) -- Kyle Phillips' first major-league homer broke a 10th-inning tie Monday and lifted the San Diego Padres to a 3-2 decision over Atlanta.

Phillips jumped on a hanging breaking ball from George Sherrill (1-1) and sent it over the fence in straightaway right field, breaking a 2-2 tie and handing the Padres their fourth win in five games.

The clout made a winner of Chad Qualls (3-2), who hurled a scoreless bottom of the ninth. Heath Bell collected his 13th save with a 1-2-3 tenth for San Diego, which claimed the first of a three-game series at Turner Field.

Aaron Harang started for the Padres and went six innings, yielding two runs on six hits. Ryan Ludwick drove in runs with a first-inning groundout and a third-inning single.

Braves starter Tim Hudson held the Padres to one earned run on five hits in a six-inning effort.

Brian McCann went 3-for-5 with two RBI for Atlanta.
