Schiavone in, Zvonareva out in Paris

PARIS, May 29 (UPI) -- Defending champ Francesca Schiavone logged a shaky victory to reach the quarterfinals but No. 3 Vera Zvonareva fell in an upset at the French Open Sunday.

The No. 5 seed Schiavone survived 44 unforced errors, gutting out a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over 10th-seeded Jelena Jankovic and continuing a Roland Garros run during which she has lost only one set.

Former world No. 1 Jankovic, who has reached the French Open semifinals three times, is still looking for her first major title.

Top seeds Caroline Wozniacki and Kim Clijsters lost early in the tournament, and on Sunday the third seed fell as well as 14th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova claimed a 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-2 win against fellow Russian Zvonareva.

The 19-year-old Pavlyuchenkova reached the quarterfinals for the first time in her career. She will face Schiavone in the next round.
