SEATTLE, May 28 (UPI) -- David Pauley started an outstanding effort by the Seattle bullpen Friday that brought the Mariners a 4-3 victory over the New York Yankees.

Seattle overcame a 3-0 deficit, with all four of its runs coming on infield grounders that resulted in outs.

After the Mariners chipped away for two runs each in the fifth and sixth, Seattle turned to Pauley and fellow relievers Jamey Wright and Brandon League to hold off the Yankees.

Brendan Ryan singled and Ichiro Suzuki doubled to put runners on second and third in the Seattle fifth, after which both Luis Rodriguez and Justin Smoak had run-scoring ground outs.

The Mariners then loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth against Luis Ayala (1-1). A fielder's choice grounder by Ryan brought in one run and a groundout by Suzuki delivered the go-ahead tally.

Pauley (3-0) got the win with two innings of work and League recorded his 13th save with a perfect ninth.

The Yankees lost for just the third time in 10 games and fell out of a first-place tie with Boston in the American League East.
