MINNEAPOLIS, May 28 (UPI) -- Erick Aybar's three-run homer touched off a six-run surge over the final two innings Friday that rallied the Los Angeles Angels past Minnesota 6-5.
The Twins were cruising with a 5-0 lead heading into the eighth, thanks in part to three RBI from Jason Kubel, but Minnesota's relief corps collapsed over the closing two frames.
Aybar's homer in the eighth cut the Los Angeles deficit to 5-3 and the Angels went on to tie it later in the inning on an RBI single by Alberto Callaspo and a sacrifice fly from Russell Branyan.
Peter Bourjos tripled to open the ninth and scored the go-ahead run on a base hit by Maicer Izturis.
Jordan Walden came on for the Angels in the bottom of the ninth and gave up a pair of two-out hits before getting Delmon Young on a fly ball that ended the game. It was Walden's 11th save and made a winner out of Scott Downs (3-1), the fifth Los Angeles pitcher who recorded the final two outs in the Minnesota eighth.
Minnesota lost for the sixth time in seven games. Jim Hoey (0-2) gave up the fifth Los Angeles run in the eighth and the tiebreaking tally in the ninth to take the loss.
