HOUSTON, May 27 (UPI) -- The Houston Rockets have offered Kevin McHale a three-year contract to coach the team, the Houston Chronicle reported Friday.
McHale, who has worked as an analyst during the NBA playoffs for Turner Network Television, has told his colleagues at the network he has yet to sign and there are several details to work out before becoming the team's coach.
The Rockets dismissed Coach Rick Adelman following the regular season.
McHale, 53, earned entry into the Basketball Hall of Fame thanks to his playing career with the Boston Celtics, where he was a seven-time all-star. He had two tenures as coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves and also worked in the front office of that team for 16 years.
He coached the Timberwolves on an interim basis for the final 31 games of the 2004-05 season and then replaced Randy Wittman early in the 2008-09 campaign. His overall coaching record is 39-55.
Boston won three NBA titles during McHale's 13-year playing career. Houston has missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons and went 43-39 in 2010-11.
