Ex-football player pleads guilty to fraud

COLUMBIA, S.C., May 27 (UPI) -- A former first round draft pick by the New England Patriots has agreed to plead guilty to fraud in relation to a bankruptcy filing, officials said.

Rick Sanford, 54, who played college football at South Carolina, agreed to a single count of bankruptcy fraud for failing to include a Colorado condominium he owned on his bankruptcy petition, The State of Columbia, S.C. reported Friday.

Sanford could be sentenced to five years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release. Dates for his formal guilty plea and the sentencing have not been set.

Neither Sanford, nor his attorney, John Barton, Columbia, would comment on the case, the newspaper said. Sanford agreed to plead guilty to an "information" charging him with not including an ownership interest worth $70,000 in a Vail, Colo., condominium.

"The information speaks for itself," said U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles said. He declined to elaborate on the case.

When he filed for bankruptcy in 2009, Sanford listed assets of of $2.1 million and liabilities of $2.8. His assets included an home valued at just under $1 million.
