Overton leads Nelson Classic

IRVING, Texas, May 26 (UPI) -- Jeff Overton, who became a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team last year without winning a tournament, took the lead Thursday at the Byron Nelson Classic.

Overton has four second-place finishes in a six-year PGA Tour career, one of them coming in this tournament in 2010.

He shot a 6-under 64 at the TPC-Four Seasons Resort course for a one-shot lead after one round over Ryan Palmer.

Jeff Quinney, Dustin Johnson, Scott Piercy, Will Strickler, Chris Riley, Josh Teater, Joe Ogilvie, Keegan Bradley and former champion Sergio Garcia were all at 66.

Overton made four birdies in a six-hole stretch beginning at the watery, par-4 11th while playing in the warmth of the afternoon.

The first blast of Texas summertime heat is expected to hit on the weekend, with a temperature near 100 degrees forecast for Saturday.

Overton posted a 2-2 record in last year's Ryder Cup matches in Wales, defeating Ross Fisher 3-and-2 in their singles match. He has played in 13 previous tournaments this year and has missed the cut just once, but he also has only two finishes among the top 20.

K.J. Choi, playing for the first time since winning the Players Championship, shot a 71 and was tied for 76th place. David Toms, who finished second to Choi two weeks ago and then won last week at the Colonial Invitation, is not playing at this event.
