Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

ANAHEIM, Calif., May 26 (UPI) -- Brett Anderson pitched eight shutout innings and Andy LaRoche finished with three RBI Thursday to help the Oakland A's beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-3.
Anderson (3-4) gave up three hits, struck out four and issued three walks for the A's, who split the four-game series with the Angels.
Oakland had to hang on for the win after the Angels got a three-run home run from Mark Trumbo off reliever Grant Balfour in the bottom of the ninth.
LaRoche drove in a run in the second inning with a groundout and then stroked a two-run double in the fourth off Angels starter Joel Pineiro (2-1), who allowed four runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
Cliff Pennington had two hits and drove in a run for Oakland.
