MLB: St. Louis 3, San Diego 1

SAN DIEGO, May 24 (UPI) -- Kyle Lohse tossed eight innings of one-run ball and Daniel Descalso knocked in the tie-breaking run Monday in the St. Louis Cardinals' 3-1 win over San Diego.

Lohse (6-2) held the Padres to five hits, walking one and striking out five. The Cardinals right-hander turned in his fourth straight strong outing, during which he has allowed only five runs over 27 innings.

Fernando Salas picked up his eighth save in the ninth, as first-place St. Louis won for the seventh time in eight contests.

Skip Schumaker stroked a one-out double off Padres closer Heath Bell (2-1) in the ninth and scored when Descalso grounded a hit to right, breaking a 1-1 tie.

Descalso went to third on Allen Craig's long fly and then came home on Ryan Theriot's single for an insurance run.

San Diego starter Dustin Moseley allowed only one run on five hits over seven innings in a no-decision.
