Spanish cyclist dies in freak accident

MADRID, May 23 (UPI) -- Spanish cyclist Xavier Tondo died Monday after being crushed between his car and a garage door at his Pradollano apartment, officials said.

Tondo, 32, who was preparing for the Tour de France, was setting out for training when the accident occurred, authorities said.

Officials said the car rolled forward and pinned Tondo against the door after he got out to open it, Cadena SER reported.

Tondo was with fellow cyclist Benat Intxausti as the two were leaving to ride with Alejandro Valverde in the Sierra Nevada mountain range outside Granada.

"He was an incredible person who loved this sport more than anyone," Tour de France champion Alberto Contador said in a report from the BBC.

Tondo won the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon in April and finished sixth in the Vuelta a Espana in 2010.

Belgian cyclist Wouter Weylandt was killed after a crash in the Giro d'Italia earlier this month.
