The 38-year-old fighter-turned-promoter told TMZ.com in a statement he had come to the conclusion it was time to deal with "certain issues."
"Like everyone, I have my flaws, and I do not want to be one of those people that is afraid to admit and address those flaws," the statement said.
The Los Angeles Times said Sunday De La Hoya and other sources at his Golden Boy Promotions declined to provide any details on the issues or De La Hoya's condition.
"He's real good; he's going to be fine," said one person close to De La Hoya.
De La Hoya was last seen in public May 6 and was communicating with fans via Twitter Saturday prior to the light-heavyweight title fight between Bernard Hopkins and Jean Pascal that Golden Boy was promoting in Montreal, the Times said.
