CASARES, Spain, May 22 (UPI) -- Ian Poulter's 6-foot par putt on the 17th hole Sunday handed him a 2 & 1 victory over Luke Donald at the Volvo World Match Play Championship.

Poulter's win snapped Donald's string of 12 straight match-play triumphs and gave him his 11th European Tour title.

The result also denied Donald the top spot in the golf rankings. He could have become the No. 1 player in the world if he had won at Spain's Finca Cortesin Golf Club.

Donald couldn't hang onto the lead on three separate occasions, with Poulter sinking a 4-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole to take the lead for good.

Poulter advanced to the finals after downing Nicolas Colsaerts in a 19-hole match Saturday.
