
BOSTON, May 22 (UPI) -- Tim Wakefield and two relievers combined to shut the Cubs down on four hits Sunday and the Boston Red Sox registered a 4-1 inter-league win over Chicago.
Wakefield (1-1) baffled the Cubs with his knuckleball, holding them to one run on four hits. He struck out three and didn't issue a walk in his third start of the season.
Daniel Bard tossed 1 1/3 innings of shutout ball and Jonathan Papelbon finished up with a scoreless ninth for the Red Sox, who won the rubber match of a three-game series with the Cubs.
Adrian Gonzalez went 4-for-4, improving to 10-for-15 in the series, and Kevin Youkilis added a two-run triple for the Bosox.
James Russell (1-5) allowed three runs on seven hits over four innings in an emergency start for the Cubs, who were without scheduled pitcher Matt Garza (elbow stiffness).
Jeff Baker drove in Chicago's only run.
