
CASARES, Spain, May 19 (UPI) -- Lee Westwood and Luke Donald, ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the world, both recorded easy wins Thursday at the Volvo Match Play Championship.
Westwood breezed past Anders Hansen 6-and-5 and Donald posted a 4-and-3 decision over Ryan Moore at the Finca Cortesin Golf Club.
The tournament involves eight three-player groups, with one player from each group moving on to the quarterfinals after two days of round-robin play.
Martin Kaymer opened the tournament with a 2-and-1 decision over Y.E. Yang and current U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell defeated defending British Open titleholder Louis Oosthuizen 3-and-1.
Rory McIlroy put himself in position to reach the quarterfinals by fighting off Retief Goosen 1-up. Miguel Angel Jimenez was a 6-and-5 winner over Masters champion Charl Schwartzel.
