TORONTO, May 18 (UPI) -- A two-run homer by Matt Joyce helped stake Tampa Bay to an early six-run lead Wednesday and the Rays held on to edge Toronto 6-5.
Toronto had a six-game winning streak snapped.
Tampa Bay scored three times each in the second and third innings, and then fought off a comeback that saw the Blue Jays close within a run in the ninth when Rajai Davis raced home from third on a groundout by Yunel Escobar.
Kyle Farnsworth then struck out Corey Patterson to end the game and pick up his ninth save.
Toronto committed five errors, but only one of the Tampa Bay runs was unearned.
Elliot Johnson had a two-run single in the second and contributed a sacrifice fly in the third after Joyce had hit his seventh homer of the season.
Jeremy Hellickson (5-2) lasted 5 2/3 innings to win his fourth straight start. He allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits with six strikeouts.
Jesse Litsch (4-3) was charged with the loss, surrendering all six runs on seven hits in five innings.
Toronto's Aaron Hill drove in runs with a fielder's choice grounder in the fourth and a double in the sixth.
