CINCINNATI, May 17 (UPI) -- Chicago Cubs pitcher Andrew Cashner aggravated a rotator cuff strain, setting back his rehabilitation indefinitely, the team said Tuesday.
Cashner will be shelved for at least two weeks after working for six weeks on a rehab program meant to get the right-handed starter back into the Cubs' rotation, General Manager Jim Hendry said in Cincinnati.
"I feel real bad for him," Hendry told the Chicago Tribune. "He worked real hard and his rehab had gone really well up to this point. Obviously the main goal will be to continue to get it right so he can continue to have a bright future. It's unfortunate."
Cashner, a 2008 first-round draft pick from Texas Christian University, injured his rotator cuff during his first start of the season in April.
The team had originally hoped he could make a minor league start soon and resume his duties by the all-star break.
