Choi edges Toms in Players playoff

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla., May 15 (UPI) -- K.J. Choi parred the first playoff hole after David Toms missed a short par putt, sending him to a victory in The Players Championship.

Toms forced a playoff with a birdie on the 18th hole, matching Choi with a 2-under-par 70 to finish at 13-under 275.

On the extra hole, played on the famed island green 17th at TPC Sawgrass in Florida, Choi got his second shot to within 40 feet of the hole, while Toms stopped 19 feet from the stick.

Choi's try for a birdie went 3 feet past the hole and Toms' birdie try also stopped just over 3 feet away. But Toms lipped out his par try and Choi then made him pay, tapping in the par putt to collect his eighth PGA Tour victory.

Paul Goydos (3-under 69) finished in third at minus-11.

Knotted in fourth place were Luke Donald and Nick Watney (both 71s) at 10-under 278.

Third-round leader and reigning U.S. Open champion Graeme McDonald struggled Sunday, falling to 7-over 79 and tied for 33rd at five-under par.
