CHICAGO, May 9 (UPI) -- Defender Christie Rampone will be the captain for the No. 1-ranked United States team for the 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany.
Rampone, who will be appearing in her fourth Women's World Cup, is the only member of the U.S. team who participated in the Americans' 1999 championship. U.S. Coach Pia Sundhage announced her team Monday.
Midfielder Shannon Boxx and forward Abby Wambach will be making their third World Cup appearances. The 21-player roster also includes 12 players playing in their first Women's World Cup.
The U.S. team was drawn into Group C with Colombia, North Korea and Sweden.
The United States is No. 1 in the women's rankings by FIFA, the world body governing soccer while the host Germans are second followed by, in order, Brazil, Japan and Sweden.
Germany is a two-time defending Women's World Cup winner. The Americans won in 1991 and 1999. The 1995 tournament went to Norway.
