DARLINGTON, S.C., May 8 (UPI) -- Regan Smith skipped a pit stop during a late caution flag and rolled to an upset victory Saturday in NASCAR's Showtime Southern 500 in South Carolina.
Smith held off Carl Edwards at the finish by 0.2 seconds for his first win in his 105th career Sprint Cup Series start.
Brad Keselowski came in third, followed by Kasey Kahne, the pole sitter, and Ryan Newman.
Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer made contact in the late going, with Bowyer careening into the inside wall at Darlington Raceway. Busch then bumped Harvick and sent him into the outside wall.
After the race was over, Harvick pulled up next to Busch, got out of his car and approached Busch. It appeared Harvick threw a punch at Busch, who was still inside his car.
Both drivers were summoned for a discussion with race officials.
