PITTSBURGH, May 8 (UPI) -- Ryan Doumit hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning Sunday that rallied Pittsburgh to a 5-4 victory over Houston.
The Pirates let an early 2-0 lead get away, but Doumit brought them back with his third home run of the season.
Pittsburgh's bull pen gave up the early advantage and cost starter James McDonald a chance at victory after he had given up three hits and walked two during six scoreless innings. McDonald equaled his career best with eight strikeouts.
Houston took the lead with a three-run seventh that featured a solo homer by Chris Johnson and a successful squeeze bunt by Angel Sanchez that brought home Humberto Quintero.
A sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth by Brett Wallace increased the Houston lead to 4-2.
Neil Walker reached on a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Fernando Abad (1-3) and Steve Pearce drew a walk. That brought up Doumit, who homered to left on a 1-0 pitch.
Daniel McCutchen (1-0), who allowed Houston's eighth-inning run, picked up the victory. Joel Hanrahan worked a perfect ninth for his 10th save.
