CHICAGO, May 8 (UPI) -- Johnny Cueto went six innings in his season debut Sunday and four relievers completed a shutout that gave Cincinnati a 2-0 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Cueto had a 12-7 record in 2010, but the start of his fourth major league season was delayed because of soreness in his right arm that landed him on the disabled list.
He returned to the mound Sunday to give up five hits with four strikeouts.
Bill Bray, Sam LeCure, Nick Masset and Francisco Cordero combined to allow a hit and strike out four over the final three innings. Cordero picked up his sixth save.
Ramon Hernandez singled in the first Cincinnati run in the second and Drew Stubbs hit a homer in the fifth. Cincinnati won for the fourth time in five games.
Cincinnati's Joey Votto went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and failed to reach base safely for the first time this season. He had done so in 33 straight games. Dave Collins set the modern Cincinnati record when he reached safely in 34 consecutive games to start a season in 1981.
Ryan Dempster (1-4) suffered the loss in a seven-inning effort. He allowed both runs on five hits.
