DURHAM, N.C., May 8 (UPI) -- Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski announced Sunday that Jeff Capel, previously the head coach at Oklahoma, had joined his staff as an assistant.
Capel coached the Sooners for five seasons and compiled a 96-69 record. Oklahoma played in the NCAA Tournament twice under Capel and reached the regional finals in 2009. He was dismissed last March after Oklahoma suffered through its second straight losing season.
Prior to his time with Oklahoma, Capel coached Virginia Commonwealth for four seasons.
"We are excited to have Jeff joining our staff," Krzyzewski said. "He is an outstanding coach and will be a great fit in our program. Jeff has been a highly successful head coach at the Division I level and he will continue that here at Duke. Adding a coach of his caliber will make everyone in our program better."
Capel played at Duke under Krzyzewski during the 1990s, starting for four seasons and scoring 1,601 points. He was on the team that played for the national championship in 1994.
