TORONTO, May 7 (UPI) -- Justin Verlander threw the second no-hitter of his career Saturday, allowing only a walk while carrying Detroit to a 9-0 victory over Toronto.
Verlander took a perfect game into the eighth before finally surrendering a walk to J.P. Arencibia on the 12th pitch of the at-bat.
The seven-year veteran then had to wait while seven of his teammates came to the plate in the top of the ninth.
Once he finally returned to the mound, Verlander quickly disposed of the final three Toronto batters. He retired David Cooper on a pop-up to second, John McDonald on a ground out to second and Rajai Davis on a strikeout.
Davis swung and missed on a 3-2 pitch, touching off a Detroit celebration.
It was the second no-hitter thrown in the majors this year. Minnesota's Francisco Liriano threw one against the Chicago White Sox Tuesday.
Verlander's other no-hitter came against Milwaukee on June 12, 2007. He is one of three pitchers currently working in the majors to have two no-hitters to his credit, joining Mark Buehrle of the White Sox and Roy Halladay of Philadelphia.
Buehrle and Halladay both have a perfect game to their credit and Verlander came close to performing that feat as well. He threw 108 pitches, striking out four.
Detroit backed up Verlander with 11 hits, including a solo homer by Jhonny Peralta and a two-run shot by Alex Avila. Both of the long balls came in the fourth inning.
The no-hitter continued Detroit's overall momentum. The Tigers have won four of their last five after suffering through a seven-game losing streak.
