CHICAGO, May 6 (UPI) -- Jay Bruce hit a three-run home run Friday that powered the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
Bruce's home run, his seventh this season, was a towering shot well over the right-field wall in the fourth inning. Cincinnati added a pair of two-out RBI singles from Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips the next inning.
The Cubs scored single runs in four consecutive innings but couldn't offset the bigger Cincinnati rallies.
Reds starter Edinson Volquez (3-1) allowed all the Chicago runs in his five innings of work but still got the win. He gave up six hits -- all singles -- and walked four while striking out three. Francisco Cordero earned his fifth save.
Matt Garza (1-4) had given up one hit and was ahead 1-0 until Edgar Renteria opened the Cincinnati fourth with a single. Votto walked and, after an out, Bruce connected on a slider for the home run that made it 3-1.
The Cubs scored on a double play in the bottom of the fourth. Cincinnati's Paul Janish doubled to open the fifth before Chicago got two outs. But Renteria walked and Votto and Phillips delivers back-to-back RBI singles.
Chicago got run-scoring base hits from Aramis Ramirez in the fifth and Geovany Soto in the sixth.
