DETROIT, May 4 (UPI) -- Detroit Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya will have exploratory surgery on his right elbow and is likely out for the season, the team announced Wednesday.
The hard-throwing pitcher has not seen game action since season-ending surgery last summer to repair a fractured bone at the tip of his elbow.
Tigers athletic trainer Kevin Rand told MLB.com the procedure is set for next Tuesday and will seek to establish why the hurler hasn't progressed in his recovery.
Zumaya put in an encouraging pre-season rehabilitation stint, but it was followed by a Feb. 27 spring training appearance during which the elbow problems resurfaced.
"He's worked very hard," Rand told the Web site. "That's what makes it so frustrating."
The once-promising reliever with the 100 mph fastball has suffered a series of injuries since his rookie season in 2006 when he helped the Tigers make a surprise run to the World Series.
