BOSTON, May 2 (UPI) -- Adrian Gonzalez sparked a big seventh inning with a bases-clearing double and the Boston Red Sox went on to outslug the Los Angeles Angels 9-5.
Clinging to a 3-2 lead, the Red Sox exploded for six runs in the frame to put the contest away and the take first of a four-game set against the Angels.
Jason Varitek singled and Jacoby Ellsbury doubled with one out against Hisanori Takahashi, who was lifted in favor of Francisco Rodriguez. After Dustin Pedroia walked, Gonzalez lined a shot that bounced off the center field wall, scoring all three runners.
Kevin Youkilis followed with an RBI double and David Ortiz capped the rally with a two-run home run.
Clay Buchholz (2-3) earned the victory, allowing two runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Angels starter Jered Weaver (6-1), who came into the game with an ERA of 0.99, failed in his bid for a seventh straight win. The right-hander gave up three runs on six hits over six frames.
Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer and Maicer Izturis went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Los Angeles.
