Azarenka keeps rolling with Madrid win

MADRID, May 2 (UPI) -- Fourth-seeded Belarusian Victoria Azarenka continued her hot streak Monday, gaining the third round of the Madrid Open with her 12th win in 13 matches.

Azarenka remained on a roll at on the red clay of the Magic Box in Madrid, dispatching Swedish qualifier Sofia Arvidsson 6-1, 6-1.

She'll next face Spain's Arantxa Parra Santonja, who upended 13th-seeded German Andrea Petkovic 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to land a spot in the third round.

Also logging victories Monday were second-seeded Vera Zvonareva, who bounced back from tough first set to beat fellow Russian Elena Vesnina 0-6, 6-3, 6-3, and No. 8 Maria Sharapova, who hung in against fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Other seeded players in action Monday included No. 6 Chinese Li Na, who defeated Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), and No. 9 Shahar Peer of Israel, who fell in an upset to Russian Alisa Kleybanova 3-6, 2-6.
