BOSTON, May 1 (UPI) -- Carl Crawford drove in the game-winning run with a ninth-inning single Sunday, boosting the Boston Red Sox to a 3-2 decision over Seattle.
Jed Lowrie reached third when his one-out deep fly to right field was lost in the sun by the Mariners' Ichiro Suzuki for a triple. One out later Crawford hit a sharp grounder up the middle that bounced off the pitcher's mound and chased home Lowrie with the winning run.
David Ortiz hit a two-run double and Jonathan Papelbon (1-0) picked up the victory with a scoreless top of the ninth as the Red Sox avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Mariners.
Jamey Wright (0-1) absorbed the loss after M's starter Felix Hernandez had surrendered two runs on six hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out 10.
Jack Cust and Luis Rodriguez drove in runs for Seattle, which wrapped a 5-1 road trip.
