Nats' Zimmerman to have surgery

WASHINGTON, April 30 (UPI) -- Washington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman will miss six weeks after undergoing surgery on a torn abdominal muscle, the team said Saturday.

Dr. Bill Myers of Philadelphia will perform the procedure Tuesday, repairing an injury the infielder sustained in spring training.

Zimmerman played in the Nats' first eight regular season games, batting .357 with one home run, five runs scored and four RBI, before being placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Zimmerman, a key part of the Nationals' lineup, last year hit .307 with 25 home runs and 85 RBI.
