MEMPHIS, April 30 (UPI) -- Zach Randolph started and finished a late-game run Friday that allowed Memphis to complete a shocking series triumph with a 99-91 win over San Antonio.
The top-seeded Spurs were eliminated from the playoffs in six games, falling in the Western Conference quarterfinals after winning 61 contest during the regular season.
Memphis will now take on Oklahoma City for the chance to play for the Western Conference title.
Memphis held a narrow lead throughout the second half until San Antonio jumped in front 80-79 on a jumper by Antonio McDyess with 4:48 to play in the fourth quarter.
Randolph then ignited an eight-point run with a hook shot and his two free throws with 2:54 to go gave the Grizzlies an 87-80 cushion with 2:54 remaining.
San Antonio's exit from the playoffs perhaps ended a dynasty that has seen the Spurs win four NBA titles since 1999. They have finished first or second in their division in all but one of the last 21 years.
The Spurs became only the second No. 1 seed to lose in the opening round of the playoffs since the best-of-seven format was instituted. It was the first playoff series victory for Memphis in franchise history.
Randolph made 12-of-22 shots from the field and led Memphis with 31 points. Marc Gasol added 12. Tony Parker paced the Spurs with 23 points.
San Antonio had barely survived in Game 5, getting a 3-pointer at the fourth-quarter buzzer from Gary Neal to force overtime on its way to a 110-103 victory.
With the close of the first round of the playoffs, the NBA will get its conference semifinal series under way Sunday with Boston visiting Miami. Chicago will take on Atlanta in the other Eastern Conference semifinal and in the West the two-time defending Los Angeles Lakers will meet Dallas.
