ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 30 (UPI) -- Matt Joyce came home with the game-winning run on a 10th-inning wild pitch Saturday, handing Tampa Bay a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
Joyce doubled to lead off the frame and went to third on Casey Kotchman's groundout. Fernando Rodney (0-1) then uncorked a one-out pitch that Angels catcher Hank Conger couldn't handle, and Joyce scampered home for the victory.
Joyce also accounted for the Rays' other run with a fifth-inning solo homer as the Rays broke a four-game home losing streak.
The run made a winner of Joel Peralta (1-0), who pitched a scoreless top of the 10th. Kyle Farnsworth blew a save in the ninth by allowing a game-tying RBI groundout to Howie Kendrick.
Rays starter James Shields, coming off two straight complete-game wins, pitched well again, holding Los Angeles to one run on six hits over eight innings while fanning 12.
The Angels' Joel Pineiro, making his first start of the season, also pitched well, limiting Tampa Bay to one run on four hits over seven innings of work.
