BALTIMORE, April 27 (UPI) -- Vladimir Guerrero singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning Wednesday and the Baltimore Orioles survived the loss of a four-run lead to down Boston 5-4.
Luke Scott and Adam Jones both homered in the fourth to start the Orioles on their way to an early advantage and Baltimore held a 4-0 lead going into the eighth. Boston, however, tied the game in that inning with Kevin Youkilis finishing off the rally by hitting a three-run homer.
Red Sox reliever Daniel Bard (0-3) then gave up singles to Nick Markakis and Derrek Lee to start the bottom of the eighth and Lee moved to second on a passed ball. Guerrero followed with a single to center on which Markakis scored and Lee was thrown out at home.
Kevin Gregg came on to work a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save. The win went to Koji Uehara (1-0), even though he surrendered the game-tying homer to Youkilis.
The Orioles won their second in a row over Boston and climbed past the Red Sox out of the cellar in the American League East.
