Hamels (2-1) walked three and allowed four hits. He escaped a bases-loaded situation in the second and was dominant after that.

Madson retired all three men he faced and struck out one.

Both Philadelphia runs scored on a Ryan Howard triple in the third. That was one of six hits given up by Clayton Richard (1-1), who walked four and struck out over 7 1/3 innings.

The effort by Hamels lowered his earned run average from 4.32 to 2.92.
