Mason's Larranaga heads to Miami (Fla.)

CORAL GABELS, Fla., April 22 (UPI) -- Jim Larranaga, the all-time leader for coaching victories at George Mason, is taking over the men's basketball program at Miami (Fla.), the school said Friday.

Larranaga, 61, replaces Frank Haith, who resigned as Miami coach to take a similar position at Missouri.

"Coach Larranaga is the real deal," University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala said. "He's a winner, an inspirational leader, and he cares deeply about his players and staff. We're delighted to welcome him and his wife as the newest members of the Miami Hurricane family."

Larranaga coached at George Mason for 14 seasons, building a 273-164 record. He guided the Patriots to the Final Four in 2006.

He previously coached at American International and Bowling Green and has a career record of 470-334 over 27 seasons.

"On behalf of the university community, we respect and thank coach [Larranaga] for all he has done for the university as well as the basketball program," George Mason Director of Athletics Tom O'Connor said. "We thank him for his contributions and are appreciative that he leaves Mason with the program in great shape heading into the future."
