SAN DIEGO, April 22 (UPI) -- Roy Oswalt dismissed any concerns about potential back problems Thursday by allowing a hit over six innings and lifting Philadelphia over San Diego 3-0.
Oswalt did not give up a hit until the fifth inning and three relievers preserved the shutout.
Jose Contreras gave up a two-out double in the ninth, and then walked Will Venable. That brought up pinch-hitter Brad Hawpe as the potential tying run, but Contreras struck him out looking to end the game and pick up his fifth save.
Oswalt (3-0) walked two and struck out seven. He had left the game after six innings in his previous start with a sore back.
Ben Francisco and Brian Schneider both hit solo homers in the second and a fielding error by San Diego's Chris Denorfia in center allowed another run to score in the third.
Mat Latos (0-3) took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings.
