OAKLAND, Calif., April 20 (UPI) -- Brett Anderson gave up four hits over eight innings Tuesday to lead the Oakland A's to a 5-0 shutout of Boston.

Anderson (1-1) struck out eight and walked one before turning the game over to Craig Breslow and Brian Fuentes who limited the Red Sox to one hit in the ninth inning and nailed down the Athletics' third consecutive win.

Anderson was staked to a 1-0 lead in the first inning that held up until the A's pushed four insurance runs across in the eighth.

Hideki Matsui had the key hit in the eighth, a two-run double. Daric Barton, Kurt Suzuki and David DeJesus also drove in runs for Oakland.

Adrian Gonzalez had two hits for Boston, which had been riding a three-game winning streak. John Lackey (1-2) took the loss after giving up one run on four hits in six-plus innings.
