CHICAGO, April 20 (UPI) -- Reid Johnson lined a solo homer in the 11th inning Wednesday, handing the Chicago Cubs a 2-1 victory over San Diego in the first game of a doubleheader.

Johnson led off the 11th by hitting a line shot on the first pitch from Luke Gregerson (0-1) that barely cleared the left field wall and the Cubs nosed above .500 at 9-8 with the victory.

Jeff Samardzija (1-0) got the win with two innings of scoreless relief.

Starter Matt Garza tossed six innings of shutout ball on a cold day at Wrigley Field, allowing six hits and striking out nine. Closer Carlos Marmol blew a save by allowing the Padres to tie the score in the ninth.

Dustin Moseley started for San Diego and worked six innings, allowing only one unearned run on five hits.
