MLB: Oakland 5, Detroit 1

OAKLAND, Calif., April 17 (UPI) -- Trevor Cahill held the Tigers to one run over eight innings Sunday and the Oakland Athletics handled Detroit 5-1.

Cahill (2-0) didn't walk a batter and struck out nine in the 112-pitch gem, with his only mistake coming on a solo homer by Casper Wells in the sixth inning.

Josh Willingham drove in a pair of runs with a fifth-inning single and Mark Ellis doubled twice for the A's, who used th win to gain a split of the four-game series.

Brad Penny (0-2) was touched for five runs on four hits over five innings for Detroit, walking four and striking out five.
