
DENVER, April 17 (UPI) -- Dexter Fowler triggered a big eighth inning for Colorado Sunday with a two-run double and the Rockies went on to defeat the Chicago Cubs 9-5.
The Rockies scored four runs in the frame, breaking open a 5-5 tie game to win record their eighth win in nine games.
Ryan Spillborghs singled and Jose Lopez doubled to open the inning against Marcos Mateo (0-1). After Ty Wigginton struck out, Fowler lined a pitch to center, scoring both runners and handing Colorado the lead.
Jonathan Herrera and Carlos Gonzalez (4-for-5) each added an RBI in the rally, making a winner of Rafael Betancourt (1-0), who had recorded the final two outs in the top of the eighth.
Starlin Castro went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Cubs, who dropped the rubber match of their three-game series in Denver.
