LONG BEACH, Calif., April 17 (UPI) -- Mike Conway claimed the first IZOD IndyCar Series win of his career Sunday, besting Ryan Briscoe in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.
The Briton finished 6.3203 seconds ahead of Briscoe, who had held the lead after a restart with 15 laps remaining.
Briscoe led Ryan Hunter-Reay and Dario Franchitti into the first turn when Hunter-Reay suddenly slowed. Conway, who was in fourth place, used the opportunity to jump past both Franchitti and Hunter-Reay and into second.
Then, with 14 laps remaining, Conway slipped past Briscoe for the lead. He built a 2.5-second advantage with a dozen laps to go and lengthened it as the race wound down.
Franchitti finished third to take a seven-point series lead over Long Beach pole-sitter Will Power.
Rookie James Hinchcliffe and Alex Tagliani completed the Top 5 finishers.
